The intervertebral disks are the cushions that sit between the vertebrae of the spine. They are often a source of spinal pain. Your doctor may have ordered discography to help determine which if any of your disks are causing your low back or neck pain. Generally, discography is a diagnostic tool and not for spine pain therapy. A needle is carefully inserted into the disk with x-ray guidance. The disk is then filled with a contrast agent to look for disk damage and determine if the disk is painful or not. Surgical planning often considers the result of this test.
